Talents

Use the talents you possess - for the woods would be a very silent place if no birds sang except for the best. --Henry Van Dyke
I get a quote and inspirational email daily from a place called http://www.charityfocus.org/ and they have great suggestions on how to use your talents, giving and serving others. Today it made me stop and think how I use my "true talents" and what are they really??
I believe I have the talent of cooking, which I do use as often as I can. Whether for family dinners or entertaining others or cooking a meal for the ill, I do cook and enjoy it!
Entertaining is another, as mentioned, and I think I use that one often too. I have people here for dinners, I host events for church, clubs and friends and I help others when they entertain.
Other talents are harder to come up with. I have been told on many occasions that I have the "gift of listening" and I am not sure if that is a talent. I do enjoy being present for people and hearing what they may have heavy on their hearts or simply just chatting. I should explore that one more an see how I can use it.
I have a talent of organization. It is to a fault at times and something I project to my family in way not always best for them....sorry. But, I can keep it organized pretty well. I can also organize meetings, gatherings, events and so forth....so if you need any help, let me know. Now if I could just keep my shoes in my closet organized.....they are ALWAYS a mess.
I have always wished for the talent of music....but I have NONE. Can't carry a tune out of a box. But I know this, I love music and enjoy others talents there. Thank goodness my girls got their daddy's talent of music!
What are yours? Which haunt you and which do you enjoy most? How can we get new talents and how can we use the ones we have to best work, serve or help others, or help ourselves?
Now I am off to organize, all my holiday things are almost put away and I must get the rest of the house back in order!

On the second day of Christmas...........

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS: the true meaning
With the Twelve Days of Christmas nearly completed, we thought you would be interested in the tradition of the meaning behind that traditional song.

People often think of The Twelve Days of Christmas as the days preceding the festival. Actually, Christmas is a season of the Christian Year that lasts for days beginning December 25 and lasting until January 6 - the Day of Epiphany - when the Church celebrates the revelation of Christ as the light of the world and recalls the journey of the Magi.
From 1558 until 1829 people in England were not allowed to practise their faith openly. During this era someone wrote 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' as a kind of secret catechism that could be sung in public without risk of persecution.
The song has two levels of interpretation: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the church.
Each element in the carol is a code word for a religious reality.

1. The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ.
2. The two turtledoves are the Old and New Testaments.
3. Three French hens stand for faith, hope and love.
4. The four calling birds are the four Gospels.
5. The five gold rings recall the torah (Law) the first five books of the Old Testament.
6. The six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation.
7. Seven swans a-swimming represent the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit.
8. The eight maids a-milking are the eight beatitudes.
9. Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the spirit (Gal.5).
10. The ten lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments.
11. Eleven pipers piping stand for the eleven faithful disciples.
12. Twelve drummers drumming symbolize the 12 points of belief in the Apostles Creed.
There you have it, the HIDDEN meaning of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and the secret behind the song.

5 more posts

I was looking at the blog world today and realized that after this post, I have only 5 more to reach 200. Now for some that is not a big deal and for others it is a big deal. For me, it is neither really.

I began blogging in the fall of 2007 right before I moved from San Antonio to Tulsa. My first blog was TEXAS TO TULSA BURKES and then only 3 months after arriving in Tulsa, we got news of our move to Ohio so I changed my name to HIHOOHIO....thought it was kinda cute! We moved to Ohio 4 days shy of 5months in Tulsa.

Since blogging all began for me, I tried to stay in touch with my family and many friends around the US. Mostly my Texas family and friends, but a few others. I still stay in touch through blogging but I actually use FACEBOOK more often.

FACEBOOK is like crack I think....at least it was for me at first. I started trying to find anyone and everyone I knew....now or past....and to my luck, I have reconnected with a couple LONG LOST school friends and otherwise.....(LESLIE & KELLIE) But even FACEBOOK is getting a little less interesting to me.

Part of that is I just do not have time like I did after my surgery this summer to just sit and look around on the computer, but part of it is that FACEBOOK has changed a bunch since I started. Not as easy to get around.

So, I will continue to check into my little blogging world. I am still grateful for the opportunity to check in and post information for my far away family and friends. My goal is to post my 200th post on December 31st! Seems like it is fitting to end the year with a blog bang!

Until then, I just need 4 more reasons in 3 weeks to stay in touch.......so stay posted....no pun intended.
